Description

The twelth and final edition of Daniel Cathell’s volume on the the ethics and conduct of doctors as revised by his son William. Interesting look into the 19th century notions about medical ethics and conduct.

Cathell began writing the book in the days before reforms in medical education made it necessary to actually learn something about medicine! Near the beginning of the text, Cathell writes :

The standard has fallen lower and lower, until we have at last reached a point at which the … brainless bumpkin … who is following the plow … thinks he can find a place where he can be metamorphosed into an MD tomorrow and that a sign or doorplate with his name (and the prefix Doctor) on it and a buggy at his door is about all that is necessary.

Daniel Cathell’s purpose was to raise the standards and help skilled physicians prosper.
