Victor Serge’s novel about the days of the Russian Civil War following the Communist Revolution of 1917. The novel depicts the erosion of Socialist aspiration, the rise of the secret police and famine and despair of the era. This book was nearly destroyed. The first English translation was only made possible because a copy of the original was discovered in a cellar. Translated by Richard Greeman.
